In Protest Sew Along
Welcome to the In Protest Sew Along! I'm so glad you're here, and I cannot wait to see what you make over the next few weeks. My dream is to flood Instagram with images of protest quilts as diverse, colorful, and passionate as you!
We’re already partway through the sew along, but you’re still welcome to join the fun! You can catch up on anything you’ve missed by checking my blog, where I’ve posted the previous weekly emails. I’ll make sure you’re included on all upcoming emails as well.
I’ll be checking for new sign-ups periodically and adding folks to chat groups in batches, so there may be a bit of a delay, but I promise you’ll get there. If you aren't added to a group within ~48 hours, feel free to give me a little nudge by sending me a DM on Instagram.
What You'll Need:
To participate, you'll need the In Protest pattern. If you don't have it, you can grab it here:
You'll also need a 12-inch square block for your sign. This is where you can really make it your own. Your sign, your message, your method. You can:
- Use any pattern you want
- Or skip piecing altogether and use fabric paint, collage, embroidery, appliqué, or any other technique that speaks to you
Sew Along Details and Prizes!
This sew-along will run for 5 weeks, starting January 6th, 2026. You are welcome to follow along week by week, work ahead, or move at your own pace. I will send email reminders as well as tips and photos at the beginning of each week.
Weekly check-ins are optional but participants who complete at least two check-ins will be entered to win a prize. I will be randomly selecting five participants to each receive a $200 donation to the nonprofit of their choice, along with a free pattern. And I will be donating any remaining proceeds from pattern sales of In Protest during the sew along to organizations close to my heart, including ACLU and Planned Parenthood.
Fine print: In order to be entered, you must tag me @quiltbynight in your check-in posts. This is the only way I am able to see and track them. The winner will be randomly selected on 2/10/2026. The chosen organization must be a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit and able to accept online donations. The free pattern will be delivered via email in PDF format.

Weekly Schedule:
Week 1 - 1/6/26 to 1/12/26:
Fabric selection, sign block selection or design, start the sign block
Week 1 check-in: share your fabric pull or your ideas or progress on your sign block
Week 2 - 1/13/26 to 1/19/26:
Assemble section 2 (units F through N), continue to work on the sign block
Week 2 check-in: progress pictures - anyone doing fun nail polish colors?
Week 3 - 1/20/26 to 1/26/26:
Assemble sections 1 and 3 (units A through E and O through R), continue to work on the sign block
Week 3 check-in: progress pictures, sign ideas
Week 4 - 1/27/26 to 2/2/26:
Assemble sections 4, 5, and 6 (units S through X), sew together sections 1 through 6 to complete bottom half of your block. Continue to work on the sign block
Week 4 check-in: progress pictures, full hand completed
Week 5 - 2/3/26 to 2/9/26:
Finish sign block, assemble section 7, and add to the bottom half to finish your block!
Week 5 check-in: fully pieced protest block!
